Hi, I’m Matt Robinson — dad of three, Little League president, baseball coach, recovering picky eater, and the guy behind Real Food by Dad, one of the original dad food blogs on the internet.
Welcome to my corner of the web, where feeding a family isn’t a chore — it’s how we stay connected. Whether it’s a 30-minute weeknight dinner after practice, game day snacks for the dugout, or a slow Sunday breakfast before the first pitch, everything I share here comes from one place: real life with my boys.
How Real Food by Dad Started
I launched Real Food by Dad in 2014 because I couldn’t find a food blog that spoke to dads like me — guys who aren’t trained chefs but still want to put good food on the table every night. Back then, nearly every recipe site was written by and for moms. I wanted something different: a dad food blog built around the reality of raising hungry kids on a busy schedule.
What started as a place to document our family’s weeknight dinners has grown into one of the most trusted dad food blogs on the web, with over 600 tested recipes, millions of readers, and more than a decade of experience feeding a growing family.
About Matt Robinson
I’m a self-taught home cook, husband to Naomi Robinson (the talented baker and photographer behind Bakers Royale), and father to three boys — one in elementary school, one in college, and one who’s already out in the world on his own. Our family has been through every stage of feeding kids, from puréed baby food to dorm-room care packages, and I’ve cooked through all of it.
Outside the kitchen, I serve as president of our local Little League and have coached youth baseball for years. If you’ve ever tried to get dinner on the table after back-to-back games, a board meeting, and homework — you know exactly why my recipes are fast, forgiving, and built for real life. Baseball and cooking are the two things that bring our family together, and this blog is where those worlds meet.
I’m based in Ladera Ranch, California, and when I’m not cooking or at the ballfield, you’ll find me planning our next family trip or testing a new recipe on my kids (they don’t always cooperate, but that’s part of the fun).
What You’ll Find on This Dad Food Blog
Every recipe on Real Food by Dad is built around one question: will my family actually eat this on a Tuesday night? If the answer is no, it doesn’t make the cut. Here’s what that looks like in practice:
- Easy weeknight dinners — 30-minute meals, sheet pan suppers, one-pot pastas, and slow cooker recipes designed for busy families.
- Game day and tailgate food — nachos, sliders, dips, and finger food perfect for baseball games, football Sundays, and backyard cookouts.
- Kid-friendly recipes — dishes tested and approved by picky eaters of all ages, from toddlers to teenagers.
- Snacks and fueling food — pre-game and post-game snacks, lunchbox ideas, and energy-packed bites for active kids.
- Desserts and treats — simple sweets, no-bake recipes, and crowd-pleasers that don’t require a pastry degree.
- Dad life beyond the kitchen — stories, tips, and lessons from raising three boys, coaching baseball, and running a Little League.
Why Families Trust Real Food by Dad
I’ve been doing this since 2014 — over a decade of writing, testing, photographing, and sharing recipes that real families actually cook. I’m not a professional chef, and that’s the point. Every recipe on this site was developed in a regular home kitchen by a regular dad, tested on real kids, and refined until it worked.
My wife Naomi Robinson and I both run food blogs, which means our household runs on recipe development, honest taste-testing, and a shared belief that family-friendly recipes should be simple enough for anyone to make and good enough that everyone asks for seconds.
Here’s what sets Real Food by Dad apart from other dad blogs and food blogs:
- 600+ original recipes — all developed, tested, and photographed in our home kitchen
- 10+ years of experience — one of the longest-running dad food blogs online, publishing since 2014
- Real family testing — every recipe is approved by three boys at three different life stages
- A dad’s perspective — practical, no-fuss cooking from someone who balances dinner with baseball practice, homework, and everything in between

The Dad Behind the Blog
At the end of the day, Real Food by Dad is about one thing: getting families around the table together. Whether you’re a dad who’s just learning to cook, a mom looking for kid-approved recipes, or a coach searching for team snack ideas — you’re in the right place.
I’ve been where you are. I’ve burned the chicken. I’ve had three kids refuse dinner. I’ve microwaved hot dogs when the plan fell apart. And I’ve also nailed it — put something on the table that made everyone stop talking, start eating, and ask what’s for dinner tomorrow. That’s what this blog is for.
If you have a question, want to collaborate, or just want to say hi, reach out through my contact page or find me on Instagram, Facebook, or YouTube — I’m @realfoodbydad everywhere.
Thanks for stopping by. Now let’s get dinner on the table.
